WHAT IS TILE FLOORING?
Pros
- Water Resistance: Most tile materials, such as porcelain and ceramic, are water-resistant, making them ideal for wet areas.
- Easy to Clean: Tiles are easy to clean and maintain, and they are resistant to stains, which makes them a practical choice.
- Environmentally Friendly Options: Some tiles are made from sustainable materials or are recyclable, which can be eco-friendly. Allergen-Friendly: Tiles do not trap allergens like dust or pet dander, which can be beneficial for allergy sufferers.
- Heat Resistance: Tiles do not easily scorch or burn, which can be an advantage in kitchens or around fireplaces.
Cons
- Cold Underfoot: Tiles can feel cold and hard underfoot, which may not be comfortable in colder climates without proper heating.
- Hardness: The hardness of tile can make it less forgiving on the feet and more prone to breakage if heavy objects are dropped.
- Maintenance: Grout lines between tiles can be prone to staining and require regular cleaning and sealing.
- Slippery When Wet: Some tile materials can be slippery when wet, posing a safety hazard, especially in bathrooms.
- Weight: Some tile materials can be heavy, which may require a sturdy subfloor and may not be suitable for all locations.

MOST COMMON FORM OF TILE & RATED PURPOSES
CERAMIC TILE
Ceramic tile is very versatile, it works well in a wide range of applications. It is particularly prized not only for its durability and attractive look but also because – properly installed – ceramic tile resists water and is easily kept neat and clean. Ceramic tile is also usually less expensive than porcelain tile.
Although it is typically used in counters and even floors kitchens, bathrooms it doesn’t have the strength to be used for flooring in high-traffic areas like foyers, hallways and reception areas except on walls, but it has even found a place in bedrooms and mudrooms. Most ceramic tile is ONLY rates from PEI 0 to 3 – is does NOT do well in heavy traffic or hard use.
PORCELAIN TILE
Porcelain tile is made from clay fired at a very high temperature, resulting in a tile that’s dense, hard, fine-grained and smooth. Porcelain tiles are much less likely to absorb water than ceramic tiles. This provide more frost-resistance, although they’re NOT frost-proof. Glazed porcelain tiles, as noted in the PEI ratings, are much harder and damage-resistant than ceramic tiles, which makes ideal for most indoor residential uses.
Most porcelain tiles have a PEI rating of 5. Given their low porosity and strong durability, porcelain tiles are a good match for high traffic areas that receive or are likely to get wet, such as shower and bathroom floors and counters.
Porcelain is also relatively expensive compared to ceramic, so may be too costly for large projects. The toughness and durability of porcelain make it hard to cut with a basic tile saw, so it may not be installed by some flooring companies. Floor SUREinstallers have the correct tools to cut porcelain cleanly and concisely.
